J Marlieri Juv
Julidochromis
species are found in the rocky areas of Lake Tanganyika. Members of this
genera use their lips to crush invertebrates and sponges that grow on the
shadowed rocky surfaces . Julidochromis is one of the few species that
eats sponges which, accounts for their success as a species in
an enviroment that has little to offer it's inhabitants in the variety
of available food . Julidochromis also eats algae.
Julies are substrate brooders. They chose dark caves or rocky hole for spawning. The Male will stand guard outside the nest while the feamale remains inside. After the fry reach about 1/2" they begin to travel out into the open always staying close to the rocks sometimes upside down. Julie fry are never abandoned by their parents and are tolerated inside the nest with a new spawn. How ever, it has been my experience that larger fry are kicked out during the spawning process. I use this as an indicator that things are happening again. Species such as J Ornatus will spawn small batches of eggs every week whereas J Regani and J Dickfieldi will go every 4-6 weeks.
Breeding in the aquarium is rather easy for these jewels. They keep
small territories and generally require a well built rock pile.Females
attach their eggs to the ceiling of the cave.
